Well, it’s better than staring into space! We never do discover precisely what Marsha Malone is meant to be writing – “Writer’s Block” opens with her lying on the couch looking a little perturbed; dissolves into what is clearly meant to be a fantasy sequence, and then resolves itself to find her lips wrapped around Mike Ranger’s meat. But if it gets her creative juices flowing again, that’s all that really matters.
It’s not the most adventurous loop you’ll have ever seen, but Malone’s calm beauty-under-fire makes it a worthy eyeful and, besides, there’s a lot more to come – beginning with “Panting and Panties,” with Don Fernando leading an unnamed beauty through some fascinating contortions (and keeping her panties on for most of them), and just enough anal to get you in the mood for “Anal Orgy,” with Jamie Gillis, Serena and Merele Michaels flashing and splashing their way through a sequence that pushes a lot of seldom seen buttons – including some girl on girl oral, while Jamie buries his meat in the nearest convenient asshole.
Fernando returns for “Frenchie’s Oriental Massage,” the title provided in part by the ethnicity of his partner, and in part by the oils that he massages into her prior to effecting entry. It’s a playful romp, but no matter how familiar the massage parlor scenario may be, “Beside Manner” falls back on one of the true workhorses of the porno short, a hospital bed (whose provenance is established by the occasional exterior shot), while Dominique’s lingerie will be nurse-uniform enough for most watchers. Watch out for more anal and an impressive come shot across her back.
“Sexercises,” too, keeps its underwear on for as long as possible, and again it’s dignified by the startling beauty of its co-star, in this case Diana Holt, while “Hawaii” gets full marks on the strength not only of its location shots (Hawaii indeed), but also for Mai Lyn’s unaffected loveliness and apparent disdain for even public convention. Of course she gets even hotter once she runs into Herschel Savage and Jesse Adams, and while the action itself is more or less “standard” threesome romping, her enthusiasm for everything keeps your attention on the screen.
The inter-racial threesome “Love Seat” offers some tantalizing variety, with all holes being expertly probed, while “George’s Prescription” finds Sylvia Benedict keeping her rainbow-colored socks on throughout her romp. The winners here, though, are four Kevin James vehicles, “Low Low Lola,” with Carolyn Jackson impaling her head on that always impressive dick of his; and then the closing blast of “For Your Thighs Only” (great title for any Bond fans out there), “Curly Top” and “Linda’s Lib,” with Shauna Grant, Lynn Ann and Donna Soyer all lining up for a ride on his meat rack.

By the late 1960s, peepshow loops were leaping straight into the action. No more lingering set-ups, no more scene-setting street scenes. “Model,” however, turns the somewhat conventional nature of this volume upside down, as it plants us in the studio of an ertotic artist, as he encourages his nude models (via some very amusing gesticulation) to bring ever more realism to their posing. This truly is one of those occasions when you really miss having subtitles, particularly once the camera decides to focus on the artist only, and the range of facial expressions and gestures that the now-unseen couple are arousing in him.
It takes a while before we see them through his eyes, twisting through a variety of positions – and not so well shot, strangely, that we forget about the still-watching artist. But worry not, for he’s still on the scene, and while the film is ultimately one helluva lost opportunity (1f, 2m and never the three shall meet), it’s definitely one to watch out for. As is “Lips of Fire,” which opens with some straightforward beaver action, before an anonymous hand introduces the flat of a ping-pong bat, and we’re treated to the sight of her buttocks growing redder. And that’s more or less it for a good half of the film, before it reverts to an unrepentantly dark and grainy series of fuck shots.
Don’t try this at home department. “Getting Weighed” has nothing to do with fat people, and everything to do with the art of giving a knee-trembling blowjob to a weightlifter – while he (and, later, she) is lifting weights. The action is fairly tame, as you’d expect for a couple taking turns holding up a bar-bell, so it’s no surprise that they eventually put it away and get on with some gentle fucking instead – pussy first, then tits and mouth and finally, a bold 69. It’s an intriguing sequence, so much iron and hookery give the scene the appearance of an oddly domestic torture chamber, but Billie keeps her poise throughout, and one of the most charismatic performers of her era notches up another triumph.

Titles notwithstanding, both “Anniversary Anal” and “Anal Orgy” contain more than enough action to satisfy every taste, with a face planting scene in the latter that really kicks things into gear, and some superb lesbian action too. “Fireside Chat” calms things down a little, a fairly standard and even sedate threesome that lingers long on the oral, even when there’s some hot butt action going on as well, while “Strawberry Anal”… well, with a title like that, there’s no end of possibilities, is there? Fancy houses and surprise visitors are the opening theme to Volume 38., beginning with Rene LaPaz idling around her for-sale home when the doorbell rings. Well-titled though it is (very well-titled!), the opening “Mr Foot Long” is one of those films that, for who knows what reason, feels the need to intercut the action with mood-moulding inserts, sultry close-ups of the girl as she mouths indistinguishably at the camera, smiling studies of her paramour as she nibbles at his wick and, considering the possibilities locked up inside his monster, a very vanilla approach to everything else – the thrill here is clearly geared more towards his girth than anything that he does with it, and there’s definitely a sense of lost opportunities at play here.
There’s more mugging for the camera to be found in “Charming Billie” – Billie, of course, being the mischievous looking blonde who stars in a number of early 70s loops, and who is a lot more memorable for playing to the camera than anything else. (She reappears later on the disc, alongside John Holmes in “Hole In One”). Not that anyone’s complaining, of course, least of all the uncertain looking hippy type on the receiving end of her smoldering, but it’s definitely a relief to find yourself in “Kitchen Capers,” with its hidden camera outlook, and a pair of performers who act like it isn’t there. The kitchen counters get a good work out, too.
The appearance of Vanessa Del Rio and John Holmes side-by-side in “The Lucky Patient” is probably all the recommendation that particular film needs; Holmes, too, reappears later on the disc, while we get a neat glimpse of future adult preoccupations with “The Mother,” a classic slice of old-time MILF-iness that offers a seething chronological contrast to the later “School Girl” – although the girl herself neither looks nor behaves schoolage. Highlights of this one, incidentally, include a gentle blowjob, a super sloppy facial and just a hint of foot fetishism.
The disc saves the best till last, however, as Eileen Wells takes on Johnny Keys and Jonathon Younger in “Apartment to Rent,” a threesome which sees Ms Wells cram two hard slices of black meat into her mouth, and a memorable DP as well. In fact, there’s not much that doesn’t go on in this beauty, which winds volume 44 up in winning style.

Volume seven kicks off by reminding us of a time when a degree of scenesetting was perfectly permissable in porn, even if you were stuffing the machine with quarters while you waited for the good bits. A vividly colored opener spends an inordinate amount of time watching a bathing beauty fool around by her pool, although it quickly gets down to some close-up pussy work that devours almost half the film. Whatever you do, though, don’t miss the surprise ending!

But these relative geriatrics were well-chosen all the same, and you’ll only be disappointed if you want to see everything in living color.

The disc that launched the Blue Vanities series two decades ago opens with the kind of film that typifies the early 70s peepshow, “Lucky Pierre Rides Again.” Set in the exact kind of apartment that single men of the early 70s all dreamed of having, with patterned drapes, a copy of Playboy and a beautiful blonde who thinks nothing of walking in and stripping off, Pierre’s luck is in even before you realize that Rides Again is one of those loops that doesn’t need any of the frills that others of the age insisted on. No revolving door of willing participants, no mass orgies, no silliness at all. Just a tongue that’s as fascinated by her ass as her pussy, a cock that slides straight down her throat, and two people who really, really enjoy each other’s company.
It’s a gentle film, the kind that you watch not to make sure you didn’t miss anything the first time, but because such lustful sensitivity is itself fun to watch, and they don’t rush anything either. Lovers of more extreme situations may not be impressed, but Pierre’s fans will feel as lucky as he is.
“Sex Hungry Lady” operates from the other end of the social scale, reminding us of the great lament of the ruling classes – you just can’t get the staff anymore. Anybody with a yen for yachting will think they know exactly where “Wandervogel”’s going to go… as two already naked ladies welcome their boyfriends on board their boat – and then allow themselves to be walked back onto dry land, for a beautifully filmed game of mixed doubles. A good looking cast who are definitely having fun makes up for the somewhat unadventurous sex on display here, but the dark haired girl definitely has some remarkable flexibility, and a serious-faced beauty that is definitely worth watching. And at the end they all walk back to the boat, with the girls still as naked as they were at the start. What an odd little town they must live in.
And what an odd title “Piggi U Porki” is. But who can resist wondering precisely what the film makers were thinking of when they came up with it? The distinctly non-eponymous couple who play their way through it certainly don’t deserve such names, unless one applies it to their appetite for oral sex. He’s a big boy, but she neither bats an eyelid nor spares her tonsils, and you get an idea of the size of her mission when she straddles him later in the film. A fairly run of the mill one on one, best dignified by Ms True’s presence and performance, Taxi Driver (no relation of course to the Hollywood movie of the same name) is highlighted by a fairly substantial titty fuck… more than one, in fact, and a midterm come shot that you probably weren’t expecting. And the rest, well like I said,it’s run of the mill. But it’s a pretty good mill, all the same.
4) AFTER THE GAME (Garter Girls #11)

It takes a moment to work out what’s going on here. Slow and languid camera work and movements add their own fascination to the film, and if the “plot line” does disappear the moment the trio come together, well at least they do. Come together, that is.

RANDOM RECOMMENDATIONS #6
1) Camping Sex (International Climax #4)
It’s another of those fantasies, you’re out at the campsite with your best drinking buddies when what should hove into view but a bevy of beauties who simply can’t get their tent up. So you watch and laugh at their efforts for a while, then wander over with some bottles of beer, get their tent poles firmly into place, and then gets yours into a similar state as well. In truth, far too much of this six-on-a-ground sheet epic is spent with everybody getting to know one another, and there’s some distinctly uncomfortable looking wriggling going on as well, before everyone figures out exactly what they like to do best. None of which really involves the others except as occasional witnesses, although there is one magnificently symmetrical scene, as the girl in the forefront is gently fingered, while her friends on either side of her blow their men down. And, with that out of his artistic system, and a few minutes of film still to shoot, Camping Sex finally evolves into the orgy it wanted to be all along, and the ending is all you could hope for.
2) The Happy Nurses (Kiss Films #16)
The director obviously thought he had a plot in mind here, but whatever it was, he quickly lost interest in it. We open with a rather crudely blacked up gent lying in a hospital bed, oddly wearing a fez; a doctor and nurse come in to see him, load him into a wheelchair… and that’s it for him. It looks like that’s it for the doc as well; he tries to kiss the nurse when she returns to the room, but she’s more interested in remaking the patient’s bed.
But then we cut to his office and she’s far more obliging now, laughing as he bares her breast, smiling as he parts her ass cheeks, and positively drooling as he stands at the head of his desk, with his cock sliding straight down her throat. Indeed, what follows is one of the most lovingly, and lingering blowjob scenes you’ll see, one of those moments when the actress is so obviously into what she’s doing that she doesn’t even need to act any longer. Even the director was obviously impressed; having shown it once, he then doubles back and plays it again, and barely even seems to realise that two other nurses have now walked into the room and are preparing to thrill one another as well.
There are definitely some incongruous moments here, not least of all the views out of the window towards a scene setting city skyline that pop up every so often. And we never do find out what the other nurses got up to. But that blowjob made it all worthwhile.
3) Tourist in Copenhagen (Cx #6)
A relic of the days when the Danish capital was truly considered the center of sexual freedom and licentiousness (a consequence of Alex Rezny’s Censorship In Denmark cock-umentary), Tourist In Copenhagen opens with a good few minutes of scene setting – landing at the airport, passing through customs, flagging a cab, heading for the hotel, wandering the streets… it could be a national tourist board effort, until finally our businessman hero finds himself outside a Filmcenter shop, is invited inside b y a bare breasted lady and laid on a bed. And so quickly does it all get going that they’re trying to get his clothes off before he’s even had time to extinguish his cigarette.
An impressive bulge in his underwear catches the girls’ eyes, but they’re old hands at this; there’s no unseemly squabbling for a taste or even a handful; they swap on and off with practised ease, and their customer really doesn’t need to do a thing, so well do they go about their business. But it never gets mechanical, and the anal close-ups (still a celluloid rarity in those days) probably did as much for the local tourist trade as any of the film’s other highlights, and that includes the impressive facial that showers out at the end.
4) The Cheerleaders (OZ #30)
Darby Lloyd Raines is the marquee name on this collegiate romp, as three starstruck cheerleaders surprise the star footballer as he changes after practise, and decide to get some practise in of their own. There’s a lovely naivety to The Cheerleaders, which maybe be a consequence of the costuming… there’s certainly little that could be called innocent about the girls… but the footballer certainly looks as shellshocked as he ought to, being suddenly pounced upon in this way, and there’s no denying that the girls lead the action from start to finish. There again, would you fight them off? Especially when you know that when one of them has already grabbed you for herself, the other two have found plenty else to occupy themselves with?
5) Huge Tits (60s Girls #3)
Well, there’s no denying the accuracy of that title! There’s a huge dick waiting for them as well, and the camera spends a fair amount of time acquainting the viewer with that, long before the couple actually get round to getting together. In fact, even the girl looks a little uncertain about it, approaching it much as one might advance upon a giant snake, before giving the camera an “oh, what the hell” look, and sucking the come from him in a matter of moments.
She’s not the world’s greatest actress, even by the standards of the average loop; too concerned with making the right faces, and giving the camera such sultry glances that she doesn’t seem to have had the energy to do much else. But her well-endowed co-star makes a meal of things regardless, and the loops greatest downfall is probably that the two starring hugenesses never come into direct contact. That would have been a sight to behold.

A FREE RIDE
The film that is often described as the oldest American stag movie in existence, A Free Ride, was once dated (by the Kinsey Institute) to 1915, less than a year after the outbreak of World War One caused the cameras to go out in Berlin, Paris, London and Budapest. American businessmen had already assumed Europe’s pre-war pre-eminence in such disparate worlds as fashion, confectionary and legitimate film. Why not dirty movies as well?
In fact, this scenario is probably little more than wishful thinking. While the vast majority of printed sources continue to date A Free Ride to 1915, historian Kevin Brownlow believes (and other specialists concur) that “judging by the fashions, [it] was actually made around 1923.”
That said, the most frequently cited evidence for this later date, the curly blonde Mary Pickford wig being sported by one of the two women in the film, is itself somewhat misleading. The young Pickford’s characteristic hairstyle was attracting attention from the very dawn of her career, and a 1914 Photoplay interview finds her complaining how “tired” she was “letters asking me if I wore a wig, or if part of my hair was mine, or if it was naturally curly, or if I had to curl it on an iron.”
Hairdressers labored to recreate Pickford’s tresses on their customers from the moment the actress first appeared on the screen, while actual Pickford wigs hit the market sometime after 1918, when they were launched by New York’s Follender Wig Company. They then remained in vogue at least until the mid-1920s – future First Lady Nancy Reagan, born in 1921, recalled a Pickford wig among her most treasured childhood possessions.
Besides, who can say for certain that the girl in A Free Ride is actually wearing a wig?
In many respects, the actual age of A Free Ride is irrelevant. If it is not the earliest surviving American stag, it is certainly one of them, while the standards it set in terms of production and direction offer a remarkable one-stop distillation of 20th century US erotica, from the coarse humor of the obtuse opening credits (“Directed by A Wise Guy; photographed by Will B Hard; titles by Will She”), through to the action itself.
It is this professionalism that led Buffalo State University Professor Frank A Hoffman to point out that “the relative smoothness of production shows clearly that experiments in the genre must have been carried out for some years before that time.”
It also gave rise to some remarkably inventive theories regarding the film’s origin, including one that describes it (“unfairly,” writes Brownlow) as one of famed director DW Griffith’s early works. It isn’t, although the notion that Griffith may have been responsible for the film is extraordinarily entertaining. From The Birth Of A Nation to the birth of an industry, in two easy steps. (The notoriety of A Free Ride can still be felt today – in 2004, it was even remade by New York director Lisa Oppenheim. Incredibly, the film features no actors. In her version, it is the landscape and the trees that converse and cavort!)
Filmed entirely out-of-doors, A Free Ride is set “in the wide open spaces, where men are men and girls will be girls, [and] the hills are full of romance and adventure.” A motorist picks up two female hitchhikers and, having established their character via a few crude advances, he excuses himself while he goes behind a tree to urinate. The girls follow to watch, and are clearly excited by what they see; then, when he returns, they venture into the woods for the same purpose, while he spies on them. One girl then accompanies the man into the woods for sex, with the second girl joining them a little later. Then all three go back to the car and, in just a shade under nine minutes, the viewer will have enjoyed a camera’s-eye view of coitus, fellatio, troilism and urophilia.
If the film’s makers disguised their true identities in the credits, its cast are equally mysterious. Although several silent film stars have, over the decades, been associated with early stag films, the trio that perform so gallantly in A Free Ride bear not even a passing resemblance to any recognizable star of the era, and they go to great lengths to ensure that remains the case. The man is clad in both a hat and an outsized false moustache; and when, a minute or so before the movie’s end, the latter falls away, he raises one arm to hide his face, while the offending fur is reattached. So, no clues there, either.
So, who were they? Unfortunately, we will probably never know.
